Hong Kong passes law making crypto platforms report customer data to tax authorities

Hong Kong's legislature has passed a bill adopting the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework. Exchanges and other covered providers must collect customer identity, tax residency and transaction details covering trades, crypto-to-crypto swaps and transfers to outside wallets. Collection starts in 2027, with automatic exchange of data with overseas tax authorities from 2028. The government said the rules target cross-border tax evasion, and the Inland Revenue Department will publish guidance.
