Nigeria's central bank brings in stablecoin licences and bans algorithmic tokens
The Central Bank of Nigeria has issued regulations for non-security virtual assets, in force since 5 November, covering any activity aimed at Nigerian users or affecting the country's payments or FX markets. Naira and foreign-currency stablecoins get separate licence classes, each token needs written CBN approval, and foreign-currency issuers must be Nigerian-incorporated with about ₦15 billion (roughly $11 million) in capital. Algorithmic stablecoins are banned, Travel Rule and AML checks apply, and existing operators have 180 days to apply.
